About Us

Derma Sciences, Inc. is a fully integrated manufacturer, marketer and supplier of a complete line of products for wound and skin care. Our products can be broken down into five categories: Advanced Wound Care, Traditional Wound Care, Burn Care, Skin Care and Bathing, and Specialty Securement and Closure Devices. With two wholly owned and operated manufacturing facilities in Toronto and China, we also offer exceptional contract manufacturing services for OEM or private label products.

Our company was founded in 1984, developing one of the key original advanced wound care products, Dermagran® . Created by a wound care specialist and based on the premise of topical nutritional wound therapy, the efficacy of Dermagran helped Derma Sciences become a leader in the burgeoning advanced wound care market. Since that time, the advanced wound care market has shifted from the basic management of moisture / occlusion at the site of a wound, to more "active" therapies. Derma Sciences~ goal is to be known as an innovator in this field, bringing products to market that advance wound care by promoting new technologies, empowering caregivers, and focusing on the unmet needs of patients.

An example of this is our line of Active Manuka (Leptospermum) Honey dressings, MEDIHONEY , which we will launch in October 2007.  MEDIHONEY™ is the first honey-based product cleared for use by Health Canada and also the first cleared for use by the FDA.  These unique dressings contain Active Manuka (Leptospermum) Honey, indigenous to New Zealand.  The dressings can be used in all phases of wound healing and could be considered a key dressing in any wound bed preparation protocol.  These qualities can help to take much of the guesswork out of wound management.

In 2007 we also intend to launch our novel intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) therapy device, MOBILITY1 , which delivers segmented and gradient pressure to the lower legs of ambulatory and/or stationary patients. With very strong patents protecting the benefits of this device, we hope to provide a solution for the growing number of patients with either chronic venous insufficiency(CVI) or lymphedema that would benefit from IPC therapy that enables them to remain mobile, continuing to work and living in their typical lifestyle. Currently, no other IPC device can offer these benefits to lymphedema patients or to those suffering from CVI.

Lastly, we developed a best-in-class antimicrobial silver alginate product, ALGICELLAg . Launched in late 2006, this product offers clinicians a cost-effective alternative to help reduce costs associated with silver antimicrobial dressings, while still providing optimal care. The product has a similar level of ionic silver as the market leader, delivers the silver in a similar fashion with a sophisticated ionic transfer technology, has a customer-preferred gelling profile, and absorbs 16%-35% more.

Aside from these key products, Derma Sciences also offers full lines of advanced and traditional wound care products, as well as skin care and bathing products.  Our Specialty Securement and Closure Devices line features proprietary technology and innovative product design. The result is a line of wound closure strips and catheter and tubing fastener products that are designed to outperform competitive alternatives. Interventional radiologists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, emergency room and primary care physicians alike have all seen the benefits of our technology and design, as we have built a leadership position in this area.

Through various acquisitions over the past six years, Derma Sciences has built a strong manufacturing business with broad capabilities. This strength has helped us to accelerate the growth of our business through private label and contract manufacturing partnerships with some of the largest distributors and wound / skin care products providers. This area has quickly become one of our strongest growth engines. As we look to the future, our goal is to increase our leadership position in the growing field of wound and skin care, leveraging both our key brands as well as our manufacturing capabilities, while continuing to bring next-generation products and technologies to the market.
